Just as you run “recon” on potential employers, they are collecting their own intel on you, as well. Recently, CareerBuilder revealed that over 70% of all employers screen candidates on social media, and nearly three in four hiring managers will run a cursory Google Search on a candidate before interviewing them. If you haven’t taken the time to clean up your social media presence, it’s probably time to take action – especially if you aren’t landing interviews.
Hide Your Personal Accounts
There is nothing wrong with blocking your personal accounts from prying eyes, and in fact, you should. It is just smart to keep your personal life protected. Sit down and go over your settings to ensure each of your personal accounts are set to private and double-check to make sure the only people who can see your photos are your immediate friends.
Going private is a good first step, but it is just the first step. You should still take time to clean up your profiles as there are many ways to find back door entry into your photos and posts. Go through and delete photos or posts that could be questionable and remove any photo tags you aren’t 100 percent comfortable with.
Build Professional Profiles
Once you’ve cleaned up and privatized your personal accounts, create public, professional accounts. Create a Facebook and a Twitter account using your real name where you post news, share influencers’ content and share your own ideas about your area of expertise. Make sure to use a professional headshot. It should go without saying that you should also have a public LinkedIn profile with a personalized URL that you can include on your resume. Revisit that profile and make sure it is accurate and up-to-date.
Don’t be afraid to engage in a little shameless self-promotion on your professional profiles. Talk about projects you’re working on (as long as you are not bound by a confidentiality agreement), discuss skills you are learning, tech events you’re attending and other professional activities. This will show hiring managers that you are active in the tech community and that you are investing in your personal development.
