Why AI Will Create More Tech Jobs Than We Thought

There has been a great deal of panic in the job market around the growth of artificial intelligence (AI). If you scan the headlines, you’ll find an endless array of headlines warning people that robots are finally coming for tech jobs.  The truth is; however, artificial intelligence isn’t poised to take over the human workforce. It’s designed to enhance the human workforce by speeding up monotonous tasks. In fact, artificial intelligence will actually create exciting new jobs in the future tech market.

Categories of New AI Tech Positions

According to a study by Accenture, AI is creating new categories of jobs today:

  • Trainers – The people who “teach” AI how to act
  • Explainers – The liaisons between technical teams and non-technical business leadership
  • Sustainer – The tech pros who maintain AI systems

Does this mean that there will be an extensive skill gap in these categories?  These types of jobs may sound extremely complicated, but the good news is that while some of these positions require advanced degrees and high-level skills, many of these new positions do not. Employers with an open mind and a commitment to training and development of AI teams can find talented people with the ability and willingness to learn, who can grow as these positions grow and change over time.

Making AI Work With Your Workforce

If your company is adopting AI, it’s important to not allow panic to spread throughout the ranks. AI can enhance productivity across the organization and make people better at their jobs. This is only true, however, if you take a measured approach to adoption.

Take coding, for example. AI is creeping into the coding space, causing many developers to panic about future job security. However, human beings are still needed to write and test code for many reasons. First, bots are still not adept at context. Bots can’t hold conversations with people or understand the nuances of what a client is looking for. Human beings are required to provide that context and to supervise and check the bots doing the coding.

Employers can start training talented employees today to work with AI and prepare them for the shifts in their existing positions, as well as new positions that will open within the organization as AI becomes more prevalent.  It also pays to look for new employees who have the potential to move into Trainer, Explainer and Sustainer categories as your AI adoption expands.
