What to Expect from Cybersecurity in IoT and Mobile

Technology has advanced at a breakneck pace over the last several decades, and companies are often in a rush to bring new products to market for each new wave of advancement. Currently, we live in an era where mobile and the Internet of Things (IoT) are the hot new trends. However, if companies rush too quickly into these areas without an eye for security, it leaves systems and data vulnerable. Here’s what you should keep an eye on if you are concerned about cybersecurity in mobile and IoT.

Mobile Is Now A Minimum Standard

Mobile was once a nice-to-have feature, but today, it is part of the DNA of your company’s technology. Your employees are accessing your platforms and files from their smartphones, tablets and computers almost as often as they do from their desks. Companies not only need solid infrastructure and reliable platforms, they also need to continually update security processes and procedures to ensure company data is safe, wherever your employees access it.

IoT is Complex – And Risky

Connectivity isn’t just about smartphones and tablets. There are some 8 billion Internet of Things devices in use and each day, and that number is expected to grow to 25 billion by 2020. With each device comes scads of new data that must be protected and new potential weaknesses that must be shored up. The more complex your network of devices connected to your network, the more your network is at risk.

The Biggest Threats to Our New Internet

According to a recent report on ZDNet, the top cybersecurity concerns are

  • IoT security
  • Security automation and orchestration
  • Malware and bad actor evolution
  • Ransomware evolution and escalation

Mobile security came in eighth place and industrial IoT and critical infrastructure came in tenth. The entire list of concerns was over 30 items long, leaving the sense that the “bad guys” continue to have the upper hand when it comes to cybersecurity in our hyper-connected world.  As you can see, all of the top concerns will only become bigger threats as more and more devices get connected to the internet.

However, as ZDNet notes, there is a concerning, “laissez-faire attitude toward the security of mobile and IoT applications.” Despite the fact that mobile and IoT threats impacted 60 percent of respondents and over half expressed concerned for keeping mobile and IoT secure, less than 45% of those same people considered securing those applications to be an urgent priority.

Are You Making Mobile and IoT Security A Priority?

Given the global impact of recent hacks ranging from the Wannacry crisis to Equifax’s recent hack that impacted over 100 million people, securing mobile and IoT should be a top priority for all organizations.
