It’s Time To Focus On Privacy Regulations
It has been easy for American companies to write off European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) as a “Europe problem,” but fines have already started to be levied upon US companies that do not adhere to the strict standards of GDPR. In Q1 of 2019, Google was slapped with a $50-million Euro fine due to its privacy practices and it is only a matter of time before other American businesses find themselves under serious EU scrutiny. Every company, whether it has international dealings or customers, needs to start brushing up on international privacy regulations today.
Changes To Privacy Law Isn’t Euro-Centric
GDPR grabbed a lot of headlines, but it’s more than just Europe tightening privacy laws and regulations. Vietnam, China, and Russia are all clamping down, and here in the United States, California recently passed the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 which will go into effect in 2020.
Experts agree that privacy should be a cornerstone of all digital transformation initiatives and security pros need to stay connected to privacy regs both on American soil and around the world. Thanks to GDPR, privacy is no longer a legal-only matter – it should be part of every aspect of business operations. Every security pro should be able to identify what data their company is generating, collecting, storing sharing and using. But with so many different privacy laws going into effect around the world, how can pros stay updated?
Read, Read, Read
Most information security professionals understand the importance of reading industry publications and news, but now is the time to start adding international pubs to reading lists. Even if a company is not currently under the auspices of other countries, international regulations will be the blueprints used to shape laws here in the US. The more a pro understands the nuances of international law, the better.
It is also wise to simply visit the websites of regulatory bodies to see what’s new. Most agencies, in fact, have a section of their website titled, “News” or “What’s New,” which makes it easy to see what is coming down the pipeline.
Lean On Your Network
Networking isn’t just about career advancement, it’s also about sharing knowledge. Use your network to keep in touch with people who are currently dealing with privacy regulations. LinkedIn, information security forums and other groups are a great way to connect with InfoSec professionals and build knowledge.
